Isabel Toot, age 93, of Nevada, Iowa, died at her home on Thursday, November 15, 2018.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada, with Fr. Rick Dagit officiating.  Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, November 30, 2018, from 5-7 p.m.  Burial will be in Murphy Cemetery, rural Nevada, at a later date.

Born January 27, 1925, in Port Hood, Nova Scotia, Mary Isabel (Issie) Toot was the daughter of John Angus and Catherine (McDonald) MacDonnell.  Isabel was orphaned as a young girl and was raised by her aunt and uncle, Sally and Joe Spellman, in Boston, Massachusetts.  She met Delmar Toot when he was serving in the Coast Guard during World War II.  On November 23, 1946, the couple was married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Alston, MA.

In addition to her duties as wife and mother of six children, Isabel performed clerical duties for several businesses in the area, including Farm Bureau and the Selective Service Board.  She was active in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and participated in the Bible study group.  Isabel was an avid reader and member of the Library Book Club.  She had many interests, including traveling and bowling, and never lost her love of the ocean.  Isabel cherished the friendships she made in ODO, and found special delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her spunky, strong-willed personality served her well and was a joy to her family and friends.

Survivors include four children, Joe Toot of Nevada, Greg (Betty) Toot of Nevada, Mark (Yvonne Schmidt) Toot of Britt, MN, and David (Karen) Toot of Nevada; a daughter-in-law, Molly Toot of Ames; a son-in-law, Willie Croteau of St. Paul, MN; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Stokes of Newbury, MA; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

In addition to her parents, Isabel was preceded in death by her husband in 2006; a son, Paul Toot; a daughter, Mary Ellen Croteau; a daughter-in-law, Barb Toot; two brothers, Tommy MacDonnell and Donny Spellman; and a sister, Anne Buckridge.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Isabel and her family.

“Toot family - My family and I will always cherish the moments when Izzy helped our kids with their science projects, finding things like wild geraniums, which were in Izzy and Delmar's yard. Izzy was a wonderful person and so fun to be around. We know she will be missed very much! Love Jeff and Kim Magnani

“Izzy was one of a kind - funny, smart, salt of the earth, pure joy to be around, sparkle in the eye, spunky... Pure grace. She touched so many lives. I remember playing at Mary's house one afternoon back in the 60's and seeing Izzy making homemade ice cream in the kitchen. She was the real deal. In later years on visits with Izzy I learned of her depth, breadth and big heart...

“A Mother’s legacy is not riches, possessions or worldly goods of any kind; it is the way Isabel lived, the lives she touched, the promises Isabel kept . . . it is the kind of woman she was!”

“We were saddened to hear about Izzy’s passing. She was someone whom we admired. We admired her spunkiness and her politics! She was a unique personality whom we didn’t know well but were always happy to hear about.

She was so lucky to have a family who took care of her at the end of her life.

It’s a difficult time for all of you. We hope you can find some peace in knowing what a force she was and what good she did during her life.”
