Lauri C. Netz, age 57, of Nevada, died Monday, December 14, 2015, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames following a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, with Pastor David R. Burling officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the church.  Committal services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2015, in Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa.

Born July 14, 1958, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Lauri Carol Netz was the daughter of Loren and Barbara (Gasho) Netz.  She grew up in Marion, Iowa, where she graduated from Marion High School in 1976.  She then attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Library Science.  Lauri was employed as school librarian in the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District, then accepted employment as librarian for the Nevada Middle School where she has worked for over 25 years.  Lauri valued her students and served as a positive role model and mentor to many over the course of her career.

Lauri was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada and participated in the church bell choir and Women's Bible Study Circle.  She volunteered with Stephen Ministries, was taking classes through Luther Seminary to become an Associate in Ministry (AIM), and also was involved with cancer support groups.  Professionally, Lauri was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher’s sorority.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteering her time in the butterfly room at Reiman Gardens.

She is survived by her father, Loren Netz of Marion; two sisters, Marcia Patterson of Laguna Vista, TX, and Karen (Chris) Lint of Center Point; a brother, Reid (Robyn) Netz of Cedar Rapids; two nieces, Lauren Netz and Anna Netz; a nephew, Collin Lint; as well as other extended family members and a host of friends.  Lauri cherished her nieces and nephew as well as two special young people, Karrie Anne Burke and Eric Spencer.

Lauri was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Netz, in 2002; and her brother-in-law, Larry Patterson.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Lauri and her family.  Memorials in her name may be directed to Memorial Lutheran Church of Nevada.

Lauri’s family would like to thank the many fine physicians, nurses, and staff members from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, and Israel Family Hospice House who assisted Lauri and provided remarkable comfort and care throughout her battle with cancer.

“Lauri will be missed by all of us that worked with her in the Nevada School District. As just an associate, Lauri helped me to learn the ins and outs of managing a school library. I could always count on her to help me with cataloging or our circulation software.

“I was saddened to see in the paper today of Lauri's passing. I remember her in my first class when I began teaching as the librarian at Vernon JH in Marion in 1972. When I found out that she had chosen library science as her career, I was thrilled. Over the years I'd had contact many times with Lauri, by e-mail and at library conventions. She was an avid reader who always respected her students, and vice versa. The library profession has lost a great one! My sympathies go out to all of Lauri's family and friends.

“I have known Lauri most of my life. We went through school together. We grew to know and love God together. I know that her faith has upheld her through the good and trying times of her life. I send my sincerest sympathies to her family and all the friends she has made over the years since she and I last saw each other. I know she's with her Lord now and in his tender care she watch over us all.”

“To the family of Lauri Netz,
I was so shocked to read of Lauri's passing. I certainly enjoyed her as a student in Vernon Jr Hi here in Marion. Then I was very proud for her to go into the field of education and extremely pleased she was in the Nevada Community School System, especially Milford Twp where I grew up. I enjoyed stopping to chat with her. We shared similar work ethics and the desire to help students learn and do their best. And I was also very proud for her continued learning in Theology of the Lutheran Church where I attended in Nevada. Lauri will be remembered by the many lives she toughed! I plan to be in Marion Fri at 1PM to join you at her final resting spot. She will rest in Gods arms forever. May God Peace be with each of you. Respectfully, Jurine Borton Moore, Milford Twp, Nevada/Marion”

“ I count myself both privileged and honored to call Lauri Netz my friend. She was an amazing woman! She inspired me to be a better person. Her spirit and dedication were a gift to all whose life has been enriched by her presence. I have shared a friendship with her for 39 years. I am thankful for every day, season, and year that I knew her. Her tireless devotion to help others is a legacy that will live on well past her short time on Earth. I know that in the whisper of a breeze, or the sound of a bell in the distance I will feel her presence throughout the remainder of my life. Those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. Rest in peace my dear friend.”
